概要

At a time of technological homogenization, what does it mean to think and create from the periphery? This exhibition brings together media art, craft and DIY practice to examine the entangled local cultures and technologies, and how they are each experienced, interpreted and constructed in their respective localities. Hokkaido and Cyprus-based practitioners considering the current state of art and technology explore unlikely (post)colonial parallels between the two countries, as well as what insights the non-binary and in-betweenness — a "nowhere that is everywhere" capable of breaking free from binary opposition — can offer when thinking about technology today.

The North Canal district of Otaru is marked by numerous traces of the movements of people, goods, and industry. Warehouses, disused railway lines, port infrastructure, and the former Hokkai Can No. 3 Warehouse, which serves as the venue for this exhibition, remain embedded in the landscape. These traces not only tell the story of a port city shaped by connections across the sea, but also provide a point of departure for a dialogue between Cyprus and Hokkaido—two places situated at the peripheries of larger cultural and geopolitical networks.

テクノロジーによって世界が均質化された現代において、「周縁」から思考し、創造することにはどのような意味があるだろうか。本展覧会では、メディアアート、工芸、DIYの実践を掛け合わせ、複雑に絡み合う地域の文化やテクノロジーに着目し、それがそれぞれの地でいかに経験・解釈・構築されているのかを考察する。北海道とキプロスを拠点とし、アートとテクノロジーの現在地を考える実践者たちが、一見共通点のなさそうな両国の（ポスト）コロニアルな類似性、そして二項対立から抜け出しうる「どこでもないどこか」を探求する。

小樽の北運河地区には、人や物、産業の移動が残した数多くの「跡」が存在する。倉庫群、使われなくなった鉄道路線、港湾施設、そして本展の会場となる旧北海製罐第3倉庫。こうした痕跡は、海を介して外の世界と結ばれてきた港町の歴史を物語るとともに、キプロスと北海道という二つの周縁的な土地を結ぶ対話の出発点となる。
